This is one of 10 basic rights known collectively as the <a href=\"https:\/\/tysllp.com\/taxpayer-bill-of-rights\/\">Taxpayer Bill of Rights.<\/a><\/p><\/div><div class=\"x-text x-text-headline e4266-e7 m3ai-4\"><div class=\"x-text-content\"><div class=\"x-text-content-text\"><h2 class=\"x-text-content-text-primary\"><strong>The right to pay no more than the correct amount of tax means that taxpayers can:<\/strong><\/h2>\n<\/div><\/div><\/div><div class=\"x-text x-content e4266-e8 m3ai-5\"><ul>\n<li>File for a refund if they believe they <a title=\"About Publication 556, Examination of Returns, Appeal Rights, and Claims for Refund\" href=\"https:\/\/www.irs.gov\/forms-pubs\/about-publication-556\" data-entity-substitution=\"canonical\" data-entity-type=\"node\" data-entity-uuid=\"d0322751-0251-4946-97a6-55748d1abcbb\">overpaid their taxes<\/a>.<\/li>\n<li><a title=\"Let us help you\" href=\"https:\/\/www.irs.gov\/help\/let-us-help-you\" data-entity-substitution=\"canonical\" data-entity-type=\"node\" data-entity-uuid=\"f2ce1661-ca57-4ae9-acb9-284abe27b0c1\">Contact the IRS<\/a> if they believe there is an error on a notice or bill.<\/li>\n<li>File an <a title=\"About Form 1040-X, Amended U.S. Individual Income Tax Return\" href=\"https:\/\/www.irs.gov\/forms-pubs\/about-form-1040x\" data-entity-substitution=\"canonical\" data-entity-type=\"node\" data-entity-uuid=\"40e49abc-e11f-4aca-9c01-069d8c62963a\">amended tax return<\/a> if an error is discovered after the original return was filed.<\/li>\n<li>Sign into <a title=\"Your Online Account\" href=\"https:\/\/www.irs.gov\/payments\/your-online-account\" data-entity-substitution=\"canonical\" data-entity-type=\"node\" data-entity-uuid=\"2587138d-ebc2-4787-8b10-13cb2fc1e3ed\">IRS Online Account<\/a> and request that any amount owed be removed if it exceeds the correct amount due.<\/li>\n<li>Request that the IRS remove interest from the account if the agency caused unreasonable errors or delays.<\/li>\n<li>Submit an <a title=\"Offer in Compromise\" href=\"https:\/\/www.irs.gov\/payments\/offer-in-compromise\" data-entity-substitution=\"canonical\" data-entity-type=\"node\" data-entity-uuid=\"c5fc1031-77af-4cc5-a088-883b5dd81568\">Offer in Compromise<\/a> to ask the IRS to accept less than the full amount of tax debt.
