Criminals continue to make aggressive calls posing as IRS agents in hopes of stealing taxpayer money or personal information.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Here are some red flags that should alert you that you may be the target of a tax scam, along with actions you can take if you receive a scam call.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>First off, the IRS will never:<\/b><\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Call to demand immediate payment using a specific payment method such as a prepaid debit card, gift card or wire transfer. Generally, the IRS will first mail a bill to any taxpayer who owes taxes.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Threaten to immediately bring in local police or other law enforcement groups to have the taxpayer arrested for not paying.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Demand that taxes be paid without giving taxpayers the opportunity to question or appeal the amount owed.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Call unexpectedly about a tax refund.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2><b>Taxpayers who receive these phone calls should:<\/b><\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Record the number and then hang up the phone immediately.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Report the call to TIGTA using their <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.treasury.gov\/tigta\/contact_report_scam.shtml\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">IRS Impersonation Scam Reporting form<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> or by calling <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">800-366-4484<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Report the number to <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">phishing@irs.gov<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and be sure to put &#8220;IRS Phone Scam&#8221; in the subject line.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">You are your own best line of defense. Tax scams have robbed thousands of people, millions of dollars every year, as well as their personal information. Scammers use the regular mail, telephone, or email to set up individuals, businesses, payroll and tax professionals.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The IRS <\/span><b>doesn&#8217;t initiate<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> contact with taxpayers by email, text messages or social media channels to request personal or financial information. Recognize the telltale signs of a scam.
